2023 - What a Year!

Wow! What a year! (Come back - my next post will be aboue what's planned for 2024!)

In 2023, I became a published author! Thanks so much to all of you who have read and reviewed and shared and supported. There's no way I could have done all of this without you.

THANK YOU!

- Heather

Heroes of Grant's Crossing Book 1

What do you do when the one friend you've always turned to is no longer there?
⭐️ Small town
🇺🇸 Friendship
⭐️ Military - Homefront
🇺🇸 Loss & Grief
⭐️ First loves
🇺🇸 Family
⭐️ MM love story
🇺🇸 Honor

Three friends leave home to serve their country. Only two make it back.

After the Twin Towers fall, Derek Mitchell enlists in the U.S. Army with two of his best friends. He dreams of helping people, whether in the field of combat or back home in Grant's Crossing, Ohio.

Juan dreams of marrying his high school sweetheart and starting a family.

Joey dreams of being happy and living his own truth.

Together, they serve in multiple deployments until Juan and Joey are each grievously injured in separate combat missions. Thirteen years after initially enlisting, one doesn’t make it back.

Four months after the funeral, friends and family gather to celebrate Derek’s return to civilian life. With each story shared, he relives their final missions together, carrying the guilt of having saved one friend but not the other.

What do you do when the one friend you've always turned to is no longer there?

Wow! I still can't believe I wrote a book. I WROTE A BOOK!

And to further my 2023 writing adventure, I delved into the wonderful world of Kindle Vella - serialized fiction that is published one chapter at a time. I plan on releasing a new Vella in January, too! I hope you'll jump in and try them out. The first three episodes are always free! Happy reading!

October Leaux Cay Update

Hey there, Leaux Cay Readers! Good afternoon!

I thought I'd share my writing goals for this month as well as the latest goings-on in my writing life!

NEWSLETTER

If you didn't know, my first-ever author newsletter, Leaux Cay News, went out this past week! Yay! It'll be a regular update with my Grant's Crossing novels and Vellas, as well as a window to other authors and books. Everyone who signs up gets subscriber-exclusive gifts, such as sneak peeks into my books or extra scenes and chapters that aren't part of the books themselves. In other words, sign up, and you get some good stuff!

SAFE NOW

I'm hard at work on my follow-up book to Wayward Guilt. Safe Now, Heroes of Grant's Crossing Book 2, isn't due to hit the shelves until late March 2024, but it's already available for pre-order. It's been slow going, but I hope to get my initial draft to my alphas by the time I go to Las Vegas next month!

I'm still working on the official blurb, too, but I'm up to my tagline:

How far would you go to protect your little brother?

Marine veteran, Steve Cook, will go through hell or high water to get to his little brother, even if that means moving from state to state to find him and make him safe.

Stay tuned for more!

KINDLE VELLAS

I've started writing Kindle Vellas on amazon.com. You can find links to them on my Amazon author page. Feel free to follow me when you get there!

A Kindle Vella is a story that's published one scene or one chapter at a time. Readers can read the first three episodes for free, and after that, they can use tokens to unlock subsequent episodes. So far, I'm having pretty good luck with it. The best part is the interaction with readers - such as following the stories, giving thumbs up to each episode, leaving comments, answering polls, and, with purchased tokens, marking a story as a "fave," which can put my Vella in the featured section. (Trust me - for us authors? That's a big, no HUGE deal!)

I'm writing one story, which is Two Brothers, a drama, and also Between the Lines, which is the small-town romance side of Safe Now that was removed from the book. Think of it as a link between Wayward Guilt, i.e. Book 1, and Safe Now, i.e. Book 2.

20 BOOKS TO VEGAS

I'm heading out to Las Vegas in a few weeks for the annual 20 Books to Vegas Writers Conference for self-published authors. It'll be my second time going, and I can't wait to see all my friends and to make all new ones. We had a blast last year, and it's going to be a ton of fun, but I know I'm going to learn a lot as well.

I'll post pictures in next month's update!

MY DREAM GOAL

Might as well include a crazy, way out there, dream goal, too, right?

Well, here it is: I'd love to release Wayward Guilt into the wild as an audiobook. The quotes I've received so far from voice artists I like are pretty damned expensive. They're so much so that I'm tempted to create a gofundme page to raise money. While I'm at it, maybe I'll make it enough for a professional review as well! We'll see how things go.

Well, Leaux Cay friends, that's it for now! As always, please say hello online. Like, follow, and share all things Grant's Crossing!

I'm beginning to show up all over, but I am most active on Instagram and Facebook. I'm everywhere as @GrantsCrossing or AuthorHMSBrown. Links are below!

Thanks, and happy reading!

H.M.S. Vellas by H.M.S. Brown

Have you read any Kindle Vella stories yet on Amazon?

A what, you ask?

Kindle Vella.

It's a serialized story that's released one scene or one chapter at a time. You follow it, much like the readers of The Strand followed Doyle's first adventures of Sherlock Holmes, though I haven't yet worked in any pipes or cool hats. (It's good to have goals.)

My first Vella story features Tara Bailey, who you'll also see in Safe Now, Heroes of Grant's Crossing Book 2, due out in early 2024.

Tara's story is the first in my Grant's Crossing Family & Friends Vella Series, where you'll see some familiar characters and meet all new ones as well.

After her father is in a serious accident, Tara Bailey returns home to Ohio to help her family during his recovery. Reconnecting with old friends, she rekindles her passion for the flailing family business and her love of the small town of Grant’s Crossing itself. To her surprise, she discovers a new love, too. Will it be enough for her to stay? Or will she return to her old life in Chicago?

Episode 15 is now live, and new episodes are added each week.

Grant's Crossing Family & Friends - Tara Bailey

How does Vella work?

The first three episodes of every story are free, so it's easy to get a taste of the story.

After that, readers follow stories by unlocking more episodes using tokens. Every first-time visitor to Kindle Vella can claim 200 free tokens to read my story. If you have Amazon Prime, you start with 500 free tokens. With those, you can unlock as many episodes as you'd like. So far, my story uses roughly 125 tokens for my first 15 episodes.

What is an indie author's currency on Kindle Vella? Readers

Readers who follow our stories. Readers who give a thumbs up to our episodes. Readers who comment on episodes.

Finally, the big win is when a reader purchases more tokens, and "Faves" a story, something they can do once per week. Those "faves?" They're the golden ticket for us authors because they really boost our stories in a huge way. Kindle Vella features "faved" stories and puts our stories in front of a boatload of more readers.

And please leave a written review! Even something as simple as "I loved the book" or "Fabulous story." Whether for our Vellas or novels, such as Wayward Guilt, these reviews make a world of difference to an Indie author! THANKS!

Happy reading! - Heather

Kindle Vella - Grant's Crossing Family & Friends

Starting this week, I'm going to start introducing you to some of the friends and family we'll start seeing in my Heroes of Grant's Crossing series. Wayward Guilt - Heroes of Grant's Crossing Book 1 has been out for a month, and Safe Now, Book 2, will be out in early 2024.

In the meantime, I'd like you to get to know some of the characters you'll meet in that novel.

Amazon has something called Kindle Vella, which allows authors to tease our readers by telling stories one chapter or one scene at a time.

For my part, I'll be introducing characters with my Grant's Crossing Family & Friends series on Kindle Vella, starting with Tara Bailey. Born and raised in Grant's Crossing, Ohio, Tara is one of Ken and Helen Bailey. One of four siblings, all with names that start with T (I couldn't resist!), she's a graduate of The Ohio State University, where she roomed with her best friend, Celeste, whom you'll also get to know.

The story starts with Tara living and working in Chicago, IL, for an organization that helps rescue and revitalize small, family-owned businesses, much like the bookstore her parents own back in Grant's Crossing.

Click the picture above to be taken to Tara's story and while you're there, please click the follow button.

In the meantime, while you're mind is trying to grasp what I mean by episodes, let me tell you about Kindle Vella.

Kindle Vella is a platform where authors who don't wish to publish an entire novel at once. It's meant to be episodic, much like Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories he originally published in the Strand Magazine back in the day. Don't get me wrong, there's no way I'm comparing my stories to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's, but hey - the format is the same.

I plan to post Episodes 2-3 days per week - once I figure out how far in advance I have to do that. I'm still figuring that out, to be honest. I'll drop several in the first week to get you all started.

Click here to check out Kindle Vella.

Here are the basics:

  • Authors publish stories made up of a varying number of episodes.
  • Each episode is 500-6000 words. That's 2-20 pages each, more or less.
  • The first 3 episodes are free.
  • After that, readers unlock episodes using tokens they buy via Amazon. Prices range from $1.99 for 200 tokens and up. The number of tokens required per episode is driven by word count.
  • Give or take, my episodes for Tara Bailey's story will range from 600-2000 words.
  • Most episodes end with a quick poll to allow for interaction between authors and readers.

This is a screenshot of my token count. When you visit Kindle Vella for the first time, you start with a handful of tokens. (I can't remember the exact amount). There are also occasions where you can claim additional tokens, which is what I've done. I'll try to keep you posted as that happens, but I currently have 700 tokens, and so far, they've all been free. I've only read a handful of stories so far, so I'll keep you posted on that as well!

As an author new to Kindle Vella, I don't know how this is going to work out, but I like the idea, especially for secondary characters whose stories don't always get told. I like it for deleted scenes, much like a printed version of deleted scenes you see on DVDs. I like it for short stories with a handful of characters I plan to include in every book, but who might cause shenanigans over in Vella.

(Ahem... the Tres Widows. Good ol' Berneta, Lizzie, and Abigail. They were mentioned in Wayward Guilt, but you'll meet them in earnest in Safe Now! Heh. Heh. Heh.)

Please try out my Grant's Crossing Family & Friends on Kindle Vella. My first episodes drop on Tuesday, August 15. For those of you who have tried Vella already, what do you think?

That's it for today! Please follow me online and pick up your copy of Wayward Guilt - Heroes of Grant's Crossing Book 1. Links are all below.

Thanks, and as always - Happy Reading!
